Quinoa is like the new acai.

Well, it’s not a berry. But it’s a new health food trend that has become exclusive by virtue of being so hard to pronounce. So, for the record — it’s “kee-nwah.” And it tastes like something you would buy at the pet store to feed a bird or hamster. That is, unless you add a little pesto and butter (which I did). I added some peanuts and cilantro sauce on top and this went nicely with some Trader Joe’s “soy-cuttash” and my own crab cake recipe.

Quinoa is considered a “new” food, but it’s been around for a while. It was one of the three staple foods, along with corn and potatoes, of the Incan civilization in the Andes Mountains. It doesn’t taste that great, but it’s easy to digest and packed full of protein. If it weren’t for that, I’d rather eat rice.
